Farm Insurance Agents

Naturally successful farm insurance agents are qualified professionals.

Their number one function, and you know this if your have one,  is to make the unexpected occurrences in life a little easier and simpler for you, that it in a nutshell.

From their professional perspective, they will help you select an insurance plan that works for you.

And if they are licensed to do so that help will also include auto insurance, insurance for your home and buildings, as well as life insurance and health insurance.

They reach out to their companies and fellow farm insurance agents to provide valuable information about insurance, the risks that make it necessary, and how to protect yourself, your family, and your farm from those risks and at the same time strive to get the most for your money.

Like successful professionals of all types, a well respected insurance agent is one whose relationships with their customers is built on a foundation of shared values, quality service, mutual trust, and integrity.

In the case of farm insurance agents there is an additional vital component, something that goes far beyond their understanding of policy provisions, exclusions, and restrictions.

It is their understanding of what makes their customers tick, as people. What is important to them and why. They must understand the importance of the legacy represented by the farm itself and they want to be there as part of the solution – with a helping hand, in all matters, not just insurance.

Unlike traditional businesses that buy wholesale and sell retail, that rely on the ages old keystone principle that insures revenues exceed costs, farmers are often forced to buy at near retail prices and sell their products at near wholesale.

Farmers, even more than most business owners, are caught in the middle – between the prices of inputs they can not control, the commodity prices they can not control, foreign and domestic politics and strategies they can not control, and the weather – something no one can control.

Money is always in short supply. Setting priorities and understanding the potential consequences of the decisions made for deploying these limited dollars is critical. When something bad happens where will the money to handle it come from?

Will it come from the farmer’s nest egg, the farm business itself, or will your farm insurance agent show up with a check – new money being paid in, money that does not have to be repaid by anyone to anyone, ever.

For farm insurance agents this means that they must be ready to work with their customers to balance the risk/benefit insurance premium equation, to help manage the frequent imbalance between what the crop brings and how much it cost to produce it.

Farmers know and their farm insurance agents must be willing to understand that some risks the farmer can and should manage themselves, some risks simply do not warrant insuring at all, and others, well the entire business will be lost if they are not covered properly.

PAST NEWS:

With daunting economic updates in the news nearly every day(posted 04-24-09)
Its been just a little over a year since Ivan Rodriguez, North Hills, Calif., went Career, but, oh, what a year its been for him! In the past year, with daunting economic updates in the news nearly every day, he has built an agency of 736 policies and counting. He also racked up a slew of district awards for his success, including District Agent of the Year, Top Sales in Auto and Most Written Life Policies.

He did it by keeping his eye on short-term goals, making Auto a priority. Our approach is very basic. At the beginning of every month, my staff and I set a goal, which is between 80 to 120 total new policies. We break it down and figure out how many policies we need to sell each day, and then we get busy. We use the Lead Center, we work community events, and if we have a slow afternoon, well even open up the phone book and start calling.

Our area is very populated, and my office is on a busy street, which means we get quite a few calls for Auto quotes. We dont do quotes for them, though. If someone calls me for a quote, I go straight to the application online, and we finish with the sale. I believe that if someone calls me theyre ready to do business, and its up to me to show them why they should choose me. And most of these new customers end up eventually buying more than one policy.

Bristol West policies have played a big role in his Auto success. It is one of our most successful products; more than 50 percent of our Auto policies are Bristol West, and they have been terrific to work with. Having Bristol West as an additional Auto coverage option gives us another way to meet our customers needs, and this flexibility has really paid off for me.

For Rodriguez, a big part of success is knowing the competition. We know whats around us and whos new in the area. We also do a lot of research online with the California Department of Insurance. We know who the 10 worst companies are in California are for complaints, and a lot of our prospects come to us from those companies. We explain the quality we offer, and tell them that if they just want insurance, theyre welcome to stick with one of those other companies. We might cost a few dollars more, but if something happens, those few extra dollars for Farmers could make all the difference. And once he closes the sale, he and his staff always ask for referrals, which is where most of their new business comes from.

Its important to know whats going on in your community, says Rodriguez. Most of our customers are Hispanic. They like having a person that speaks their language who doesnt charge them to make changes to their policy. Outside brokers in our area charge $50 to $80 to for every change they make to a policy. Eventually that cost adds up, so at the end of the day, were definitely cheaper.

He has also invested in a professional-looking office, which builds trust with prospects and customers alike. Our customers feel very welcome when they come in. We have a plasma TV in our waiting area and nice desks. We have nice music playing and our walls are filled with professionally framed materials.

Once customers are in his agency, Rodriguez main retention weapon is My Alerts on e-CMS. We address our My Alerts first thing every morning. We call everybody on the list and focus on making sure they dont lapse. Sometimes they might need to adjust limits or coverages to pay, and we work with them to make that happen.

We know the economy is the way it is, and theres nothing we can do to change that, but what we can focus on is the value we bring to the table. And we take it one day and one month at a time. We focus on bringing in 80 to 90 new policies every month, and keeping the customers we already have.

His advice for agents who might be overwhelmed with the economic reports in the news every day? Work your goals one day at a time. If you focus on something negative, negative things are going to happen. But if you focus on good things, good things will come.

I’m getting a 20 year term insurance policy with State Farm. Are they testing for marijuana?

Could I Lose my job with State Farm or is the decision to terminate up to the agent I work for.

Yes, they will test for all drugs. Your agent will find out and he will decide what he wants to do.

Car Insurance Claim Check (Farm Bureau Insurance)?

Okay, I hit a coyote lastweek and I informed my Insurance company ( Farm Bureau Insurance). They told me to go get an estimate. I went to a auto body shop, the guy took notes. I waited all week for the Auto Body to get back with me, and so did the Insurance Company. The Insurance Company finally just had an adjuster come out and asses the damages. They wrote a repair bill for 527.00 plus my 500.00 deductable. So in all it was 1,027.00- I knew that this was WAY to low of an ajustment. So I called the Manager of the Insurance company told him my feelings on the matter, and whom ever came out missed many things (wires, two light’s, etc) I was going to get another estimate, and he said okay to my surprise!! I did — and it was 800.000 dollars more damage done (which we all thought)! The insurance Company was trying to low ball me. Been with them 10-years, full coverage, and two homes as well. Havent filled a claim in 6-years. I re-faxed the Manager the new adjustment from the Body Shop (A diffrent one by the way), Called and spoke with Manager as well. Will the Insurance Company make the check out to me or the Body Shop now? In the past it have always been made out to me or wife. (In ten years only two small claims) State is Oklahoma if this helps any. So in short will I get a check, or will they sent the check to the Auto Body since they faxed them a diffrent estemite? I’m using the money to get about 90% of it done at the Body Shop, but there are a few things I can fix myself. Is there any type of Law they have to send the check in my name? My fear is they will just mail the Body Shop the Check with the owners name, and this means I will have to pay more out of my pocket. Thanks. 5- point’s as always.
I know the spelling is incorrect in some places- have a baby in one arm..sorry. Thanks

Look, it’s not at ALL uncommon for any body shop to find extra damage, especially after they start taking the car apart. The normal procedure here, then, is that the body shop contacts the adjuster, and puts in a "supplemental" claim for the additional damages.

Yes, they have to mail the check in your name if you ask it, HOWEVER, if you have a loan on your car, they ALSO have to add the lender to your check. It’s MUCH easier to have the check written to the body shop, than to have to sign it over to the lender, and wait a month or two until after all the damages are fixed to their approval, and they then release the funds.

You ARE going to have to pay out of pocket, probably up to your deductible amount. That’s the POINT of the deductible.

Car insurance question. Help desperately needed, please!?

Here’s the situation. Before I start here, I will say I have never sold a car/transferred insurance in my life until now (I’m 37) and I’m panicking. (Please don’t laugh; I am somewhat mentally disabled and have a hard time understanding business side of things). Please bear with me:

I have a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu with 178,000 miles on it.

Last Friday, my husband’s brother decided to give his 2005 Hyundai Elantra (53,000 miles) to us as a free gift.

We decided to sell the Malibu to some friends of ours (with whom we have been friends for quite a few years).

My friends have already paid us and they have a Bill of Sale and next week we are getting a duplicate of the Chevy title in the mail (because we lost ours), at which time we will transfer.

Here is where the confusion begins: My mother-in-law (who is a retired State Farm insurance agent) drew up a Bill of Sale that indicated as its last sentence at the end, "Buyer will show proof of liability insurance at the time the car is received" (or something like that; I don’t have the Bill of Sale in front of me). We saw our friends today to get the Bill of Sale notarized (they already paid for the car; we’re just waiting for the title for the Malibu to arrive via mail, as mentioned above). Their insurance agent is about 90 miles away, I find out, and will need pictures of the car. Our friends insist that my mother-in-law is just "being a mom" since we’re new at such a transaction (our friends have owned and sold boats, cars, etc., so they are experienced at this, too), meaning that she’s being overcautious by saying they need to present proof of liability insurance at the exact time I give them the keys to the car. So, once I give them the title and the keys, are they responsible for when they get the car insurance?

My Hyundai is covered through my insurance agent (my mother-in-law called them and got coverage on it already), but she insists that I am not to get insurance verification on the Hyundai until the friends show proof of their insurance on the Malibu after they get possession of it. Is that correct, or is my mother-in-law just being overcautious? (I would think that once I switch the Malibu title to my friends’ name and give them the keys, that would relieve me of any responsibility any longer to the Malibu).

Help me, please. I am so confused; I have my mother-in-law telling me one thing, and my friends telling me another. Both sound correct.

So would I be right if I did these (in this exact order):
1) switch the title over to their name & give them the keys to the Malibu.
2) call my insurance agent and report that I sold my Malibu, and ask them to type insurance vertification for the Hyundai. (would I have to be present in person for them to type the verification for the Hyundai? Also, would my report of me selling the Malibu mean that they would cancel the insurance on it immediately?)

I am sorry this is so lengthy; I tried to explain this the best as I could. I just want to do what is correct in the eyes of the law.

The steps you outlined are the right ones. Once your MIL called to add the Hyundai,it was covered, even if you don’t have the insurance card, and once you sell the Malibu, it’s no longer your responsibility.

You don’t have to be present for the verification on the Hyundai; calling the agent is enough. The agent should send you a copy of the change request adding it and cancelling the Malibu.
